For the 50th anniversary of Scooby Doo, Warner Bros released a 50 episode collection of all the highlights of Scooby Doo. The back of the disc case even states "This is the one collection every Scooby Doo fan must own!". I am going to watch this collection, write what I think about each individual episode and then how I feel about the collection, and whether it reflects Scooby Doo. Then I am going to watch every other piece of Scooby Doo Media, making reviews for those as well. At the end I will rewatch the collection, make a list of things I think are core traits for a scooby franchise and then put together my own list of fifty scooby titles.
Gang it looks like we have a mystery on our hands.

So last night, on a whim, I did a quick analysis spreadsheet on this DVD I own from the "Best Of WB" selection that's supposed to be a celebration of the, at the time, 50th anniversary of Scooby-Doo

I wanted to see the distribution of shows represented, and found this information
Some interesting points of this data:
What's New and Mystery Incorporated are tied for the most episodes at 10 each. I guess those were considered the most iconic series at the time in 2019, or at the very least the easiest to pick episodes from. All of the Mystery Inc episodes I clicked into had a previously on segment upfront, so you could watch any of them without prior knowledge
The era with the least representation is the Scrappy era. I guess they still assume folks dislike the guy, though at least their exclusion of the second version of Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo can be boiled down to that show being in a 3 minute shorts format while all the rest are in 11/22 minute chunks. The lack of 13 Ghosts is less excusable imo as that was the first Scooby show with an overarching plot which is pretty important imo. I guess it didn't have premade "previously on" segments and they didnt want folks to get lost?
The 2 guest star based shows are both fully omitted. There's a few reasons for TNSDMovies to be treated that way: 1) Home Media rights issues have plagued the series for a long time as all the contracts for it were created before there even was home media. The fact that theres an almost complete set now at all is a miracle, and I imagine there was no good way to get those included on here without more negotiations. 2) Those episodes are all about 45 minutes, which is part of why that series is called movies. 3) With the exception of Batman no one knows those guest stars. Sorry lol. As for Guess Who, which avoids all those issues with its full rights to home media, standard run time, and Current guest stars, there's still one good reason for its exclusion: it didnt come out til after this disc
This set is split across 5 discs and there is no organization to them at all. sometimes you'll get a disc with 3 Mystery Inc eps in a row immediately followed by a Where Are You. I guess they didn't want to make the distribution as obvious.
Speaking of distribution, the set is notably advertised as being a celebration of all 50 years of Scooby-Doo. So how well is each year represented?
It seems despite What's New and Mystery Inc both beating out Where Are You in episode counts, they both had release schedules that were much more drawn out, so 1969 is the most represented year, as its where the bulk of WAY was released.
The years not present in this sheet are ones that never showed up on the disc. Some of that is due to lack of Scooby content released (the biggest gap in that is between 1991 and 2002, where no shows were released. The reason all of the APNSD eps come from 88 and 89 is because the last two seasons suffer from weird quality issues even on that series' complete release) and some of it is the complete ommission of shows as seen above.
What does all of this mean? WB considers Where Are You, What's New, and Mystery Incorporated to be the most notable entries in the franchise, with The Scooby-Doo Show (which is partially WAY and also where all the villains in Cyber Chase are from) and A Pup Named Scooby-Doo (which is where we get Norville and Coolsville from) fairly close behind. The rest are all set dressing, which is not bad to be clear, just not as important.
Oh also cause I have to with this franchise, no consideration was made by whoever was choosing this list as to cultural or racial sensitivity. Quite a few of the WAY eps have Native caricature villains and one of the 2 eps of Get A Clue included has a genuinely wild caricature of an Asian man as its villain. 2019 man.

It should be required for Warner bros to acknowledge the 50th anniversaries of every single Hanna barbera cartoon instead of just scooby doo and the flintstones
#''that’s too many cartoons to keep track of'' THATS THEIR FAULT#I’d rant for another hour but I’m tired and in pain

Apparently the direct to video team has been under executive mandate to not confirm the existence of magic, monsters, or Scrappy-Doo. So I get how Curse of the 13th Ghost ended up how it did, they didn't know how little that rule would budge but were now stuck with the project, but why would you even go for Return to Zombie Island after that happened. (Also to be fair, no one but Velma thinks the events of the original Zombie Island were staged, although it is odd to not at all acknowledge that Fred was the skeptic of the original film while Velma chose to just see how things went, not even needing any further verification when Fred and Daphne says the zombies are real. It's a switch in personalities I think makes sense I just think it probably should be acknowledged since it's so central to both films?)
I don’t get it either!!
There really wasn’t other a point other than the DVD sales to make a sequel, especially with this new rule. Although they only made about $3M from the dvd sales. If the original film was so loved because of the real monsters, then you have to be absolutely braindead to think that a sequel debunking that original mystery is gonna be a banger. I really think it all comes down to being a money-grab for the franchise’s 50th anniversary. (Also, it’s super funny that they have to deny Scrappy’s existence lol)
I see the strong shift in Velma’s personality, and it doesn’t make sense to me that she accepted the fact that the zombies and cat people were real in the original movie, but had such an abrupt tonal shift this movie. In the end, everyone accepted it, even Fred. So I don’t see the point in making a whole movie about them denying their past, and not even giving Fred his original hint of skepticism and instead ruining putting it all on Velma.

HAPPY 50TH ANNIVERSARY, SCOOBY DOO!!
Scooby Doo and it’s many movies and TV shows have been in my life for as long as I can remember:
Watching Witch’s Ghost when I was young and being obsessed with the Hex Girls (to the point where I rewound their first song countless times and I dressed up as Thorn for Halloween), What’s New Scooby Doo being the main show I watched while it was airing
And even as I grew older I still enjoyed it: the animated movies, the live-action movies (I still can’t listen to You & I by Anarbor without thinking of The Mystery Begins and honestly I’m okay with that), and even watching the original Scooby Doo Where Are You with my brother and laughing together while trying to figure out the mysteries
I don’t think I’m ever going to stop loving it and I just wanna thank Hanna Barbera for creating such a timeless show
Lots of love to my favourite meddling kids, and their dog too~
!! REBLOGS ARE ENCOURAGED !!
